I listened in to a webinar that was titled "A conversation on Youth Mental Health with Youth". There is no doubt that the Covid Pandemic and Shelter in Place have challenged the youth in our community in their ability to adapt to a very tumultuous situation. Being a teenager is rough, I can't imagine being a teenager and not being able to see your friends, or go to school or to have your whole family home all the time. I hope that the youth continue to find ways to speak out and have their voice heard so that we can do better in the future when situations arise.
During the Ukiah City Council Meeting there was an interesting conversation about Project Homekey 2.0. The County sent a letter to each of the cities about the Governor's Proposed Project Homekey 2.0 which provides grant opportunities to municipalities to turn hotels in to housing. There is currently one project in Mendocino County, Live Oak Apartments the former Best Western in Ukiah. The funding for this initial project came down very swiftly. The County is trying to offer the cities the opportunity to help plan a more collaborative project. I believe that if there is collaboration this could be a great benefit to our community. Friday:
Speaking of food on Friday I paid a visit bright and early to Cold Creek Compost in Potter Valley. In the unincorporated areas of Mendocino County and the City of Ukiah your food waste, soiled paper towels and greasy pizza boxes go to Cold Creek to be turned in to soil to be used by local agriculture. SB1383 requires 75% diversion of our food waste to the landfill. We are currently only at 5.7% in the State so we have a long way to go. I will do contests on my Facebook and Instagram throughout the month of July as well as attending the Farmers Market (see below) to raise awareness and hope to increase the use of the Mixed Waste bin.
We had a meeting of the Workforce Alliance Governing Board. This is one of the largest regional boards that I sit on and I want to make sure that Mendocino County has the funds and resources that the business owners and employees need. They have a new contractor and now have no staff located in Mendocino County. I look forward to providing updates and working to make sure that Mendo is not forgotten.
I was excited to be able to attend the DFC Coalition. I am very excited about the mural projects. As you know they have just recently completed a mural to recognize Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Next they will be doing a mural titled "No human is illegal" and then they will work on a third mural around the LGBTQIA+ community. They are also trying to raise awareness about the harms of "Whip-its" or "Nitrous Oxide". If you find these containers in the community please set them aside for their presentation. Also if you go to any local smoke shops please tell them to stop selling these dangerous items. Here is their petition that you can sign in support.
I had a chance to listen in to the Mendocino Climate Change Action Advisory Committee. I normally don't have a chance to catch these meetings. I am grateful that they are doing good work for the County and looking forward to hearing more about their recommendations.
Saturday:
On Saturday I went to the Farmers Market to talk about my Food Waste Challenge. I have some giveaways including bins to put under your sink to collect your food scraps so you can take them out to your green bin. The Farmers market was pretty slow. It was pretty hot out but don't forget that these local farmers are counting on you to purchase their items to keep their farms going. (And there is a market in Redwood Valley on Sunday's in the summer so you have time to check it out!)
